Weight Management

Availability of Mounjaro®

There is a national policy around the availability of weight loss medication to some patients in general practice from 23 June 2025, specifically Mounjaro® (or Tirzepatide).

GPs in Lancashire and South Cumbria have not yet received confirmation that they will be commissioned to prescribe these medications.

We are awaiting official guidance and commissioning updates and until we receive this confirmation, this medication is not currently available from the practice.

We politely request that patients do not contact the practice specifically requesting Mounjaro®.

Oviva Tier 3 Weight Management Service Referrals

We are able to refer patients – under Right to Choose legislation – to the Oviva Tier 3 Weight Management Service. This is a tailored support programme for adults with excess weight, aimed to help them achieve healthy and sustainable weight loss using various methods and with the support of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Mounjaro® and other GLP1s cannot be prescribed for weight loss by GPs – but are available via Tier 3 referral.

The Tier 3 Weight Management service is available to patients that meet all of the following criteria. The patient:

  • has been offered or completed a Tier 2 weight management programme in the past 2 years (e.g. Weight Watchers, Slimming World, National Digital Weight Management Programme, MyWeightMatters, or similar)
  • meets the BMI eligibility criteria for Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB
  • is fully committed to participating in the Oviva T3 programme
  • is medically stable and they do not require further investigation for an existing or new health condition.

In addition to the referral criteria being met, a number of investigations are needed as part of the referral, which can be discussed with a clinician.

We are unable to refer patients that meet any of the below criteria:

  • pregnant or breastfeeding
  • uncontrolled hypertension / heart condition / medical condition preventing increased activity level
  • active or suspected eating disorders
  • bariatric surgery in the past two years
  • severe mental illness
  • unhealthy alcohol or drug use
  • uncontrolled under active thyroid disease
  • uncontrolled Cushing’s syndrome.

If you meet the criteria for Tier 3 weight management and would like to progress a referral, please contact the practice via Patchs or by calling 01524 238150 and a routine appointment will be arranged.
