Testosterone

Dear Patient

We are writing to inform you of a recent update in local guidance that affects how testosterone treatment is provided through NHS services, including our practice. Unfortunately, this means that we are no longer able to prescribe testosterone under the NHS for you.

The local Integrated Care Board (ICB) has recently clarified that testosterone can only be initiated and managed by a Healthcare Professional who holds a British Menopause Society (BMS) accredited qualification.  Testosterone prescribing must now have a shared care agreement produced by this  BMS accredited Clinician in order to initiate or continue prescriptions of testosterone under the NHS. Unfortunately,  Lancaster Medical Practice has not been commissioned (ie not funded) to provide these specialist menopause clinic services and our Clinicians have not been funded to gain this BMS qualification.

In line with this updated guidance, Lancaster Medical Practice has made the decision to discontinue all prescribing of testosterone with immediate effect. We will continue to provide other HRT prescriptions under the NHS.  While we understand this may be disappointing, this decision ensures we are providing safe, evidence-based care that aligns with current local standards.

Lancaster Medical Practice has written to the ICB highlighting the lack of local specialist menopause services to provide testosterone.  To continue accessing this treatment, you would need to be referred to an NHS specialist menopause service or find a private provider who meets the BMS definition of a menopause specialist. We understand there are NHS specialist clinics, although we believe there are lengthy waits of up to 1 year to be seen in these clinics. Please see our practice website for details of these clinics you could be referred to.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,
Lancaster Medical Practice
