Zero Tolerance Policy

A number of our staff have recently experienced foul and abusive language or behaviour from a minority of patients. This is not acceptable and we will not tolerate this sort of behaviour towards our staff – all of whom continue to work tirelessly during this pandemic. In line with our zero tolerance policy, if you are found to be abusive towards members of staff then appropriate action will be taken

Please be aware that it is not a GP’s responsibility to issue school letters of absence for your children, regarding COVID-19 or other illness. Government guidance is that school attendance is mandatory unless your child is self-isolating, has symptoms of COVID-19, is close to someone who has COVID-19 or has received a letter advising them to shield.

Strong practice-patient relationships, good continuity of care and delivery of high quality services are very important to us and as a large practice, covering many sites and a large geographic area this presents significant challenge.

Over recent months we have been working hard to develop our Clinical Teams, which will allow us to meet this challenge.   Our Clinical Teams reflect our local population. They work together, in a particular geographic area and within specific Lancaster Medical Practice sites.

Our Doctor Teams

There are four teams of GPs who are supported by other clinical and non-clinical staff.

Over the last 12 months some GPs have retired or left Lancaster Medical Practice.  We are actively recruiting new GPs and will update our patient newsletters and communication screens in due course.

Nursing Team

Lancaster Medical Practice offers a wide range of nursing services including:

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners are specialist nurses who are highly trained to examine, assess and prescribe.  They work closely with the doctors in  providing a high standard of medical care and you may be offered an appointment with a nurse practitioner as an alternative to a doctor. They have training beyond that of a practice nurse and are able to treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions.  Nurse practitioners are able to prescribe medication.  A doctor is always available if they require advice on your further management.

Practice Nurses

Practice nurses provide a wide range of services including travel health advice and vaccinations, injections, pill checks, health checks, cervical smears and chronic disease management.

Health Care Assistants

Health care assistants are important members of the team supporting the nursing staff and doctors.  Their services include blood samples, blood pressure testing (including 24 hours blood pressure monitoring), ECG’s, glucose tolerance testing, assisting with minor operations and health checks.

Clinical research is essential for continually improving standards of patient care.  Research nurses play a vital role in ensuring clinical research studies run smoothly and that participants are safe and fully informed.  More information can be found under the Research tab above.

Pharmacist Team

Lancaster Medical Practice patients are fortunate to be able to see a clinical pharmacist in the practice.  These are highly qualified health professionals who train for a number of years to become specialists in medicines and how they work.  They work as part of the general practice team to improve value and outcomes from medicines.  This includes providing extra help to manage long-term conditions, advice for those on multiple medicines and better access to health checks.  All pharmacists are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Other Health Care Staff

A number of additional services are offered across our Practice sites.  These include:

  • Midwife appointments;
  • Physiotherapy appointments;
  • Listening service;
  • Alcohol advice and guidance;
  • Smoking cessation advice;
  • Sexual health appointments
